Dr. Luca Bernazzani graduated in Chemistry from the University of Pisa in 1990 summa cum laude; in 1994 he obtained a PhD in Chemical Sciences at the same University with a dissertation on the thermodynamics of the partitioning process of organic solutes between 1-octanol and water. He has been a researcher at the Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry of the University of Pisa since 1998.
Starting from the academic year 1999-2000 he held, as teaching assignment, the courses of: Physical Chemistry IV, Physical Chemistry IV and Laboratory - Module A, Thermodynamics of Solutions, Organized Solutions and Colloidal Systems for Master's degree in Chemistry, Physical Chemistry Laboratory, Industrial Physical Chemistry Laboratory for degree course in Chemistry for Industry and the Environment and Physical Chemistry and Laboratory for degree course in Physics. From the academic year 2017-2018 holds the course of Industrial Physical Chemistry and laboratory for the degree course in Chemistry for Industry and the Environment.

The research lines of which Dr. Bernazzani mainly dealt with:
a. Study of the thermodynamic properties of organic solutes in water, organic solvents and mixed solvents;
b. Application of artificial intelligence methods to the rationalization and prediction of thermodynamic properties of solvation of organic solutes in water;
c. Thermodynamic study of the aggregation of amphiphiles in water and in aqueous solution of polymers;
d. Study of the aggregation of biosurfactants in water and in aqueous solutions of macromolecules of biological interest;
e. Calorimetric and spectroscopic study of the interaction between inorganic pigments and protein binders;
f. Study of cross-linking and oxidative degradation of paint binders (oils, alkyd resins);
g. Study of the polymorphism in molecules of pharmacological interest with thermoanalytical methods in combination with spectroscopic and x-ray diffraction methods;
h. Study of microwave-assisted extraction processes of polysaccharides and proteins from waste biomass;
i. Design, construction and development of a iodine feeding system and flow control for Hall effect motors for use in the aerospace industry.
