taddei gas separationGas separation processes are a vital industrial activity that enables the purification of chemical feedstock, the removal of pollutants and the control of greenhouse gases emissions. Yet, these processes are highly energy intensive: it is estimated that they are responsible for 10-15% of the world’s annual energy consumption. Technologies based on either solid adsorbents or membranes are seen as attractive options to lower the energy demand of the process and the associated costs.

reversible conservation paper artworksNew sustainable nanomaterials can prevent paper aging. Furthermore, when the applied treatment has lost its usefulness, it can be easily removed by gel cleaning. This is the discovery of a group of Italian researchers: professors Alessandra Operamolla and Valter Castelvetro from the Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry Department of the University of Pisa, Prof. Laura Micheli, Dr. Claudia Mazzuca, Dr. Leonardo Severini and Dr. Mattia Titubante from the Department of Chemical Sciences and Technologies of the University of Rome Tor Vergata, Prof. Andrea Martinelli from the Chemistry Department of the University of Rome La Sapienza, and Dr. Laura Capodieci and Dr. Francesca Di Benedetto from the Laboratory for Functional Materials and Technologies for Sustainable Applications (SSPT-PROMASMATAS) of ENEA − Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development.

nmr relaxometry for food scienceNuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is a powerful tool for many different applications. Recently, several NMR techniques have been developed to investigate different aspects of food science; in particular, NMR relaxation and NMR field-cycling techniques revealed to be useful to characterize the chemical-physical properties of food systems, their changes during food processing, as well as to detect food adulterations.

premio dctc sci 2020The "Theoretical and Computational Chemistry" Section of the Italian Chemical Society awarded the prize for the best research work in 2020 to a paper coauthored by Jacopo Fregoni, graduate student of UniMoRe, Stefano Corni, professor at the Padua University, and two members of our Department: J. Fregoni, G. Granucci, M. Persico, S. Corni, "Strong Coupling with Light Enhances the Photoisomerization Quantum Yield of Azobenzene", CHEM vol. 6, pp. 250–265 (2020). The research concerns the photochemistry occurring in nanocavities hosting intense plasmonic fields.
